SUSAN HUFTON

Susan Hufton first studied calligraphy as part of her B.Ed. honours degree at the Roehampton Institute of Higher Education and later returned there for three years’ full-time study in calligraphy and bookbinding. She was then awarded a Crafts Council advanced training grant to study lettercarving. In 1987 she was elected a Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators. She is the author of Step-by Step Calligraphy (Weidenfeld and Nicolson 1995), is featured in Calligraphy Masterclass (Collins 1990) and contributed to The Calligrapher’s Project Book (Collins 1987). She combines commissioned work with teaching calligraphy and is currently editor of ‘The Scribe’ (Journal of the SSI).

PATRICIA GIDNEY

Patricia studied calligraphy with Ann Camp at Roehampton Institute. She was elected a Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators in 1998. She has been working to commission and teaching the craft since 1984 and is the author and designer of Handwriting: Everyone’s Art - Making Journals and Designing Posters (The Edward Johnston Foundation 1999). She has completed a series of 44 botanical illustrations for greetings card and bookmark designs and produced hand-drawn maps for The History of the Royal Navy by NAM Rodger (HarperCollins 1997). Her work was included in The Calligrapher’s Project Book and Practical Calligraphy (Hamlyn 1991). Commissions include work for The College of Arms, St Paul's Cathedral, British Museum, The Hahnemann Academy of Homeopathy, Japan, Council for the Protection of Rural England, BBC Television,  HarperCollins, Italian Chamber of Commerce, The Worshipful Company of Founders,The Worshipful Company of Armourers & Braziers & York University. She was a co-founder of the Edward Johnston Foundation Foundation.

GERALD FLEUSS

Gerald Fleuss worked for a time for the lettercarver David Kindersley before studying calligraphy and bookbinding full-time at Roehampton Institute, returning to teach there for the next ten years. He was elected a Fellow of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators in 1982, a member of the Art Workers’ Guild in 1983 and a member of the Double Crown Club in 2008. He served as Honorary Designer of the Wynkyn de Worde Society for 1998.
Gerald is the co-author (with Dr John Nash) of Practical Calligraphy (Hamlyn 1991), was featured in Calligraphy Masterclass and contributed to The Calligrapher’s Project Book and Digital Calligraphy by George Thomson (Batsford 2003). His work is included in public collections at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Houghton Library, Harvard University.
Gerald Fleuss is co-founder and Chairman of The Edward Johnston Foundation, dedicated to increasing a public awareness of calligraphy and its associated disciplines. He is currently Senior Research Fellow in the Faculty of Arts and Architecture at the University of Brighton, furthering the work of the Foundation.
